Shelby County Juvenile Court School Liaison

To better serve the youth of Shelby County, the eight local school districts and the Shelby County Juvenile Court have created the Juvenile Court/School Liaison position. The position works to build stronger relationships and strengthen communication between Juvenile Court and local school districts, as well as improve school performance and long term outcomes for students involved in the Juvenile Court system that are also struggling in school.

The Responsibilities of this position include:

Communication
Meets with local Juvenile Judge and probation staff each week to discuss cases that involve schools. Meets with County school staff to explain court procedures and policies. Meets with County school staff to explain court procedures and policies. Communicates the needs of the schools and policies to court staff.

Monitors Student Progress
Oversees a specific caseload of students as assigned by the Juvenile Court Judge. Monitors court orders over school performance in areas such as attendance, grades and behavior.

Student Transition
Plans intake meetings when a student moves from one learning environment to another or from a juvenile detention facility to a school. Assists school districts and probation staff in identifying alternate educational placements for students who are in need of alternate programming.

DAT (Diversion Assistance Team)
The Court Liaison serves on the Shelby County Diversion Assistance Team that meets twice monthly. Commonly referred to as the DAT Team, under the umbrella of Family and Children First, families and individuals are referred by County agencies for assistance.

Parent Project
The Court Liaison serves as a referral agent for Parent Project, and ESC program designed to assist identified adolescents and parents in Shelby County with parenting solutions.

Consulting
Meets with local school personnel to advise on educational options and referrals to County agencies. Serves as a consultant on truancy issues and coordinates a yearly meeting with truancy officials and the county juvenile court prosecutor.
